NAME
LinNeighborhood -- an SMB Network Browser
SYNOPSIS
LinNeighborhood [ -h -m -v -i -u -p -j ]
DESCRIPTION
- LinNeighborhood is a browser for SMB (Microsoft Windows)
- networks. It allows you to browse the available SMB shares and
- mount/unmount them via the smbfs filesystem, similarly to Net
- work Neighborhood on Microsoft platforms.
PREREQUISITES
- In order to mount or unmount SMB shares, you must have
- smbfs filesystem support compiled into your kernel, or available
- as a module.
OPTIONS
The following options are supported:
- -h,--help
- print a short help screen
- -m, --mountshares
- mount the memorized shares without starting the GUI
- -v,--version
- print out the program version number
- -i,--iconify
- start the program iconified
- -u, --user <username>
- specify username to use for network scan
- -p, --password <password>
- specify password for network scan
- -j, --job <number>
- specify the maximum number of simultaneous browse
- jobs
CONFIGURATION
- Configuration options are accessed through the
- Options/Preferences menu. Useful settings:
- Workgroup
- The Workgroup containing your Master Browser (this
- isn't necessarily the same as your workgroup). This is a
- mandatory option (it must be set), and in general should be the
- only option you need to set.
- Primary Master Browser
- The primary master browser for your workgroup, if
- you know which machine that is. If not, try setting it to a
- known Samba server.
- Additional Master Browsers
- Add any other master browsers not listed as Primary
- Master Browsers here.
- Always Scan as User
- If this is checked, you will be prompted for a
- username/password when you try to view the list of shares.
- Use Group Name on Browse
- If you set this option to on, the smbclient command
- is called with the -W option when doing a browse for machines and
- shares, the group name where the hosts are in is used. Otherwise
- the -W option is not used and smbclient uses the group in
- smb.conf. This option is important if the computers you browse
- insist on being in the correct domain. This is often the group
- you are browsing, but it can also be the group you are in, if the
- administrator uses trusted domains.
- Use Group Name on Mount
- If you set this option to on, the smbmount command
- uses the -D (for 2.0 Kernels) or -W option when mounting because
- this is sometimes necessary. You can turn it off, because older
- 2.0 kernels/smbfs packages break when it is on, and also for the
- same reasons as explained under Use Group Name on Browse.
- Initial Browse on Startup
- If this is checked Linneighborhood will immediately
- do a groups browse after startup.
- Quick Browse
- Normally, when you scan for groups only the groups
- are shown, information about the hosts in the group is only
- available when you do a group scan. If you check here, all groups
- are immediately scanned, and you see the available hosts by
- clicking the '+'-sign.
- smbclient
- The location of the smbclient(1) program. Note
- that this program retrieves configuration information from the
- smb.conf(5) file. Important options are name resolve order , wins
- server , interfaces .
- nmblookup
- The location of the nmblookup(1) program.
- smbmount
- The location of the smbmount(1) program.
- smbumount
- The location of the smbumount(1) program.
- Smbmount Version
- Select your smbmount version here, if you are using
- a >=2.1.70 Kernel. This is needed because the command line syntax
- has changed between versions of the smbmount program.
- Use 'RootMountDir/machine/share' As Default Mount Point
- If this box is checked there will be a suggestion
- for the mount point in the style 'RootMountDir/machine/share' for
- the mount point in the mount dialog.
- Root Mount Dir
- When opening the mount dialog this directory will
- be the base directory for the mount point. Normally you will cre
- ate a subdirectory from here for each single share.
- Show Log Window
- LinNeighborhood can show you all command lines and
- the corresponding outputs in a log window, when it calls the
- above utilities. If you want this, check the box. Passwords are
- hidden with '*'. There is also a button in the toolbar for turn
- ing logging on and off.
- Sorted Share Lists
- Sort displayed shares alphabetically (shares before
- printers), instead of in the order smbclient(1) puts them.
- Memorize Mounted Shares / Remount on next startup
If you want LinNeighborhood to memorize the shares- you mounted in this session in order to remount them on next
- startup, check this option. LinNeighborhood inserts all success
- ful mounts in an internal database; it also will remove them from
- this database when unmounting. This database is stored in the
- ~/.linneighborhoodrc file on program termination. BEWARE that
- this option will store your SMB password unencrypted in the
- ~/.linneighborhoodrc file (with file modes 0600).
- Run File Manager After Mounting
- Run the program listed after successfully mounting
- a share. $MOUNTPOINT will be replaced with the path to the new
- ly-mounted filesystem.
FILES
- /etc/samba/smb.conf
- the systemwide samba configuration file.
- ~/.linneighborhoodrc
- a user's personal configuration file.
